Jerry Lewis repeats his distaste for female comics

CANNES, France (AP) ? Ladies? Don't make him laugh.

Asked who his favorite female comics were Thursday at a Cannes Film Festival press conference, Jerry Lewis listed Cary Grant and Burt Reynolds. He then added: "I don't have any."

In 1998, Lewis famously said that watching women do comedy "sets me back a bit" and that he has trouble with the notion of would-be mothers as comedians.

Asked Thursday if he had changed his mind at all because of performers like Melissa McCarthy and Sarah Silverman, the 87-year-old Lewis said of women performing broad comedy: "I can't see women doing that. It bothers me."

"I cannot sit and watch a lady diminish her qualities to the lowest common denominator," he said. "I just can't do that."

Lewis was in Cannes for the premiere of "Max Rose," a drama directed by Daniel Noah in which Lewis stars as an aging jazz musician.

In her 2011 memoir, "Bossypants," Tina Fey alluded to Lewis' attitudes about women comedians: "Whenever someone says to me, 'Jerry Lewis says women aren't funny,' or 'Christopher Hitchens says women aren't funny,' ... Do you have anything to say to that?'

"Yes," writes Fey. "We don't f------ care if you like it."

(AP) ? A man being questioned by authorities in the Boston bombing probe was fatally shot when he initiated a violent confrontation, FBI officials said Wednesday.

The shooting early Wednesday took place in Orlando, Fla., where an FBI agent along with other law enforcement personnel were interviewing the man, identified as 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev.

In a statement, FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said the FBI agent acted on an imminent threat and shot Todashev.

The FBI agent was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An FBI team was dispatched from Washington to review the shooting, a standard step that is taken in such incidents.

Even before his encounter with the FBI, Todashev, a mixed martial arts fighter, had a recent run-in with law enforcement.

He was arrested earlier this month on a charge of aggravated battery after getting into a fight over a parking spot with a 54-year-old man and his 35-year-old son over a parking spot at an Orlando shopping mall. The 35-year-old man was hospitalized with a split upper lip and several teeth knocked out, according to a report from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

"Also by his own admission Todashev was recently a former mixed martial arts fighter," the arresting deputy said in his report. "This skill puts his fighting ability way above that of a normal person."

Todashev was released on $3,500 bond after his May 4 arrest. His attorney, Alain Rivas, didn't immediately respond to a phone inquiry Wednesday.

Police tape blocked off the complex of townhomes near Universal Studios where Todashev was shot.

Jared Morse, who lives in the next building from Todashev's unit, said he had been watching an NBA game when he heard loud bangs that sounded like gunfire.

"It's crazy, especially in this neighborhood," Morse said as he walked his dog. "Nothing like this ever happens here."

New technique may open up an era of atomic-scale semiconductor devices

May 22, 2013 ? Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a new technique for creating high-quality semiconductor thin films at the atomic scale -- meaning the films are only one atom thick. The technique can be used to create these thin films on a large scale, sufficient to coat wafers that are two inches wide, or larger.

"This could be used to scale current semiconductor technologies down to the atomic scale -- lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), computer chips, anything," says Dr. Linyou Cao, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper on the work. "People have been talking about this concept for a long time, but it wasn't possible. With this discovery, I think it's possible."

The researchers worked with molybdenum sulfide (MoS2), an inexpensive semiconductor material with electronic and optical properties similar to materials already used in the semiconductor industry. However, MoS2 is different from other semiconductor materials because it can be "grown" in layers only one atom thick without compromising its properties.

In the new technique, researchers place sulfur and molybdenum chloride powders in a furnace and gradually raise the temperature to 850 degrees Celsius, which vaporizes the powder. The two substances react at high temperatures to form MoS2. While still under high temperatures, the vapor is then deposited in a thin layer onto the substrate.

"The key to our success is the development of a new growth mechanism, a self-limiting growth," Cao says. The researchers can precisely control the thickness of the MoS2 layer by controlling the partial pressure and vapor pressure in the furnace. Partial pressure is the tendency of atoms or molecules suspended in the air to condense into a solid and settle onto the substrate. Vapor pressure is the tendency of solid atoms or molecules on the substrate to vaporize and rise into the air.

To create a single layer of MoS2 on the substrate, the partial pressure must be higher than the vapor pressure. The higher the partial pressure, the more layers of MoS2 will settle to the bottom. If the partial pressure is higher than the vapor pressure of a single layer of atoms on the substrate, but not higher than the vapor pressure of two layers, the balance between the partial pressure and the vapor pressure can ensure that thin-film growth automatically stops once the monolayer is formed. Cao calls this "self-limiting" growth.

Partial pressure is controlled by adjusting the amount of molybdenum chloride in the furnace -- the more molybdenum is in the furnace, the higher the partial pressure.

"Using this technique, we can create wafer-scale MoS2 monolayer thin films, one atom thick, every time," Cao says. "We can also produce layers that are two, three or four atoms thick."

Cao's team is now trying to find ways to create similar thin films in which each atomic layer is made of a different material. Cao is also working to create field-effect transistors and LEDs using the technique. Cao has filed a patent on the new technique.

Czech police seek US man suspected of 4 murders

BRNO, Czech Republic (AP) ? An American man is suspected of killing a family of four and is on the run in the Czech Republic and likely armed, officials said Thursday.

The bodies of the four victims ? identified by neighbors as a married couple and their two sons ? were found by firefighters who came tackle a fire in a house in Brno, the country's second-largest city.

Firefighters spokesman Jaroslav Mikoska said rescuers immediately realized that "a violent crime had likely been committed there." The fire did not badly damage the house.

Brno Police spokeswoman Petra Vedrova identified the suspect as Kevin Dahlgren, born in 1992, and released his photograph. A Facebook page showing the same photograph says that Dahlgren is from Palo Alto, California, and lives in Brno.

Vedrova said that all four victims were related. A Czech public television reported that Dahlgren was the nephew of the parents. Police did not immediately confirm that relationship.

A local band, Ukulele Orchestra jako Brno, confirmed to The Associated Press that two of its members were among the victims, but declined to comment further. Dahlgren's Facebook page contained a link to the band.

Vedrova and neighbors said Dahlgren had only been in Brno for a few weeks.

"As far as we know he came for a visit," neighbor Ivana Pohankova told the AP.

"Such a tragedy, they were so young," Pohankova said. She said one son was 24 and the other was a teenager under 18.

"We didn't hear anything but a neighbor came to say there was a smoke coming from the house. That's how they discovered it."

Police asked the public for help finding Dahlgren, but warned that he might be dangerous and likely has a gun. They did not immediately release any other details about the suspect or about the killings.

Another neighbor told the Czech public broadcaster he met Dahlgren two days ago and he invited him for a beer.

"He looked absolutely fine and kept smiling," Jan Fiala said. "He said he didn't like the western world, that life in America is too fast while people here are more placid."

Brno is located 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Prague. Police say they cooperated with international law enforcement agencies to confirm the suspect's identity.

NASA's IRIS mission readies for a new challenge

May 21, 2013 ? NASA is getting ready to launch a new mission, a mission to observe a largely unexplored region of the solar atmosphere that powers its dynamic million-degree outer atmosphere and drives the solar wind.

In late June 2013, the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, will launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. IRIS will advance our understanding of the interface region, a region in the lower atmosphere of the sun where most of the sun's ultraviolet emissions are generated. Such emissions impact the near-Earth space environment and Earth's climate.

The interface region lies between the sun's 11,000-degree Fahrenheit, white-hot, visible surface, the photosphere, and the much hotter multi-million-degree upper corona. Interactions between the violently moving plasma and the sun's magnetic field in this area may be the source of the energy that heats the corona to some hundreds and occasionally thousands of times hotter than the sun's surface.

IRIS will orbit Earth and use its ultraviolet telescope to obtain high-resolution solar images and spectra. IRIS observations along with advanced computer models will deepen our understanding of how heat and energy move through the lower atmosphere of the sun and other sun-like stars.

New pneumococcal vaccine appears to be as safe as previously used vaccine, study suggests

May 22, 2013 ? The new 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) appears to be as safe as the previous version used prior to 2010, the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7), according to a Kaiser Permanente study published today in Vaccine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved PCV13 for use beginning in 2010 after a series of trials. These trials found that PCV13, which protects against a broader range of pneumococcal types than the previously used PCV7, did not increase the risk for any serious adverse events related to the vaccine.

In a study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kaiser Permanente researchers evaluated the electronic medical records of nearly 600,000 children, ages 1 month to 2 years, who received PCV13 over a two-year period. Comparing the number of rare adverse events associated with the PCV13 vaccine to the number of events associated with the previously used PCV7 vaccine, the study authors found there were no increased risks for any of the following pre-specified conditions: febrile seizures, encephalopathy (a type of brain disorder), hives/angioedema, asthma, low platelet counts or systemic allergic reactions.

"It is important that children receive the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine as it provides protection against very serious and potentially fatal infections, including meningitis and bloodstream infections. The new vaccine protects against an additional six types of pneumococcal bacteria," said study lead author Hung Fu Tseng, PhD, MPH, a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation.

Early in the study, there was a statistically significant but very small increase in the risk of Kawasaki's disease, a rare condition in children that causes inflammation of the blood vessels, associated with PCV13 (7 diagnoses per 52,000 doses, compared to 4.24 expected). At the end of the study, when the diagnoses were confirmed by medical-record review, the risk of Kawasaki disease in the 28 days following PCV7 was 1 per 100,000 doses and 2 per 100,000 doses of PCV13. Although this difference was not statistically significant, the researchers note it warrants further studies. Researchers also emphasized that this is a statistical association and therefore may not represent a cause-and-effect relationship.

The CDC recommends all children ages 5 years and younger receive PCV13. The vaccine protects against pneumococcal disease, an infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The most common types of pneumococcal infections include middle-ear infections, sinus infections, lung infections, bloodstream infections and meningitis. According to the CDC, each year in the U.S. pneumococcal bacteria cause about 4,000 cases of bloodstream infections (bacteremia), meningitis, or other invasive disease in children younger than 5 years of age.

Researchers used medical records from the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a collaborative effort between the CDC and integrated care organizations, including Kaiser Permanente, to conduct the study. The Vaccine Safety Datalink project monitors immunization safety and addresses the gaps in scientific knowledge about any rare and serious events that occur following immunization.

This study is part of Kaiser Permanente's ongoing efforts to study the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. Last year, a Kaiser Permanente study conducted through the Vaccine Safety Datalink found the herpes zoster vaccine, also known as the shingles vaccine, is generally safe and well tolerated. Additionally late last year, Kaiser Permanente researchers found immunizing older adults with the tetanus-diphtheria-acellular-pertussis vaccine (Tdap) to prevent whooping cough was found to be as safe as immunizing them with the tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccine.

Police close Susan Powell case, reveal new details

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) ? For the first time, Utah police said Monday they believe Susan Powell's brother-in-law was "heavily involved" in getting rid of her body, even as they announced they couldn't solve the sensational case of a mother's disappearance after a nearly 3 ?-year investigation.

West Valley police said the focus shifted to Michael C. Powell after Josh Powell killed the couple's two boys and himself in a deliberately set house fire 15 months ago.

Police announced Monday they were closing the investigation of Susan Powell's disappearance, citing a lack of leads coupled with Michael C. Powell's suicide months ago. They also released the case file, which shows Josh Powell had an affair with a woman he met through a dating service.

The file includes other details, and contained emails from Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, who expressed hope his daughter might be found in the days after her December 2009 disappearance.

Cox believed Josh Powell poisoned his wife's pancakes before she was taken from the couple's house.

"The question is, where did he put her and will we find her before she does die?" Cox wrote in an email to Utah authorities, according to the police file. "One possibility is that she is still alive, but we need to find her before she does die, if the poison was not a fatal dose, she may ... be found."

The police file contains tens of thousands of pages of documents, photographs and video, and interview notes and voice mail messages.

In one file, police revealed they interviewed a West Valley City woman who said she made contact with Josh Powell on the dating service Live Links six or seven months before Susan disappeared. The woman, identified only as Kourtney in police files, said she knew Powell by the name John Staley, and didn't know he was married.

The woman said Powell gave her $800 over the course of their relationship ? for reasons that weren't detailed in police reports ? and that she only discerned his real identity after news broke of Susan's disappearance. The woman was interviewed by police in August 2010.

Police said they based their suspicion of Michael C. Powell's involvement partly on a car he left at an Oregon junkyard only weeks after Susan Powell disappeared. The junkyard is about 200 miles from a forest outside Salem, Ore., where authorities searched last week, looking for a body. The search turned up nothing, and police said they ran out of clues.

Deputy West Valley Police Chief Mike Powell ? no relation ? said authorities believe Josh Powell killed his wife, and that his brother later got involved in a cover-up. Michael C. Powell denied any wrongdoing while under investigation.

It wasn't until last August that Utah police discovered Michael Powell's Ford Taurus at the junkyard outside Pendleton, Ore. DNA recovered from the upholstery inside the car's trunk proved inconclusive, they said.

The Powell brothers used sophisticated computer encryption to communicate, according to West Valley City Deputy Chief Phil Quinlan. Investigators have been unable to decipher that encrypted communication, he said.

Investigators said they focused on the brother last year, when Josh Powell changed his insurance policy to list Michael Powell as a primary beneficiary, rather than his wife or children.

Michael Powell, an ardent supporter of Josh Powell, killed himself Feb. 11 by leaping from a parking garage in Minneapolis. He was interviewed numerous times last year after investigators determined he had sold his car for salvage value ? a discovery that came nearly two years after Susan Powell's disappearance. Officials said he offered evasive answers about why he got rid of the car and how he had used it in the weeks after her disappearance.

His suicide left investigators without any person of interest in the case. While authorities believe the brothers were responsible for Susan Powell's disappearance, they said repeatedly Monday that they never had enough evidence to bring charges.

"This is a circumstantial case, yes," Quinlan said. His fellow deputy chief, Mike Powell, added, "We didn't have a body. We don't have a crime scene."

Susan Powell was reported missing more than three years ago after failing to show up for work. Her husband, Josh, maintained his innocence and said he had taken the couple's young boys on a midnight camping trip in freezing temperatures the night she was last seen.

Josh Powell eventually returned to the couple's hometown of Puyallup, Wash., where he got caught up in a battle with Susan Powell's parents for custody of the boys, 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden.

On Feb. 15, 2012, he locked a social worker out of a rental home at the start of a supervised visit, attacked the boys with a hatchet and set the house afire. All three were killed in the blaze.

Days earlier, a court had ordered Josh Powell to undergo an intensive psychosexual evaluation in the custody dispute.

Josh Powell was never charged in his wife's disappearance, but unsealed documents say authorities found drops of Susan Powell's blood on a floor next to a sofa that appeared to have been recently cleaned, with two fans set up to blow on it.

Investigators also found life insurance policies on Susan Powell and determined that Josh Powell had filed paperwork to withdraw her retirement account money about 10 days after her disappearance.

"We have searched high and low for what happened to Susan Cox Powell," West Valley Mayor Mike Winder said. "What happened to Susan that night?"

Richard Durbin, D-Ill. confer on Capitol Hill in Washington, Monday, May 20, 2013, as the committee assembled to work on a landmark immigration bill to secure the border and offer citizenship to millions. The panel is aiming to pass the legislation out of committee this week, setting up a high-stakes debate on the Senate floor. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? Far-reaching legislation that grants a chance at citizenship to millions of immigrants living illegally in the United States cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a solid bipartisan vote Tuesday night after supporters somberly sidestepped a controversy over the rights of gay spouses.

The 13-5 vote cleared the way for an epic showdown on the Senate floor on legislation that is one of President Barack Obama's top domestic priorities ? yet also gives the Republican Party a chance to recast itself as more appealing to minorities.

The action sparked rejoicing from immigration activists who crowded into a Senate committee room to witness the proceedings. "Yes, we can! Si, se puede" they shouted, reprising the campaign cry from Obama's first run for the White House in 2008.

In addition to creating a pathway to citizenship for 11.5 million immigrants, the legislation creates a new program for low-skilled foreign labor and would permit highly skilled workers into the country at far higher levels than is currently the case.

At the same time, it requires the government to take costly new steps to guard against future illegal immigration.

In a statement, Obama said the measure is "largely consistent with the principles of common-sense reform I have proposed and meets the challenge of fixing our broken immigration system."

There was suspense to the end of the committee's deliberations, when Sen. Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who serves as chairman, sparked a debate over his proposal to give same-sex and heterosexual spouses equal rights under immigration law.

"I don't want to be the senator who asks people to choose between the love of their life and the love of their country," he said, adding he wanted to hear from others on the committee.

In response, he heard a chorus of pleas from the bill's supporters, seconding private appeals from the White House, not to force a vote that they warned would lead to the collapse of Republican support and the bill's demise.

"I believe in my heart of hearts that what you're doing is the right and just thing," said one, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill. "But I believe this is the wrong moment, that this is the wrong bill."

Sen. Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat who has played a central role in advancing the legislation, said he would have voted against the proposal if Leahy had pressed the case ? a defection that would have caused it to fail on a tie.

In the hours leading to a final vote, the panel also agreed to a last-minute compromise covering an increase in the visa program for high-tech workers, a deal that brought Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah over to the ranks of supporters.

Under the compromise, the number of highly skilled workers admitted to the country would rise from 65,000 annually to 110,000, with the possibility of a further increase to 180,000, depending in part on unemployment levels.

Firms where foreign labor accounts for at least 15 percent of the skilled work force would be subjected to tighter conditions than companies less dependent on H-IB visa holders.

The compromise was negotiated by Hatch, whose state is home to a growing high tech industry, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. It is designed to balance the interests of industry, which relies increasingly on skilled foreign labor, and organized labor, which represents American workers.

AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka attacked the deal sharply as "anti-worker," although he also made clear organized labor would continue to support the overall legislation.

Robert Hoffman, senior vice president for government affairs at the Information Technology Industry Council, welcomed the deal. "We obviously want to keep moving the bill forward and building support for the legislation, and this agreement allows us to do so," he said.

The issue of same-sex spouses hovered in the background from the start, and as the committee neared the end of its work, officials said Leahy had been informed that both the White House and Senate Democrats hoped he would not risk the destruction of months of painstaking work by putting the issue to a vote.

"There have been 300 amendments. Why shouldn't we have one more?" he told reporters at one point, hours before called the committee into session for a final time to debate the legislation.

A few hours later, Republicans and Democrats both answered his question bluntly.

"This would fracture the coalition. I could not support the bill," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who was a member of the bipartisan so-called Gang of Eight that drafted the core elements of the bill.

Republicans and Democrats alike also noted that the Supreme Court may soon issue a ruling that renders the controversy moot.

In a statement issued after Leahy's action, Chad Griffin, the president of the Human Rights Campaign, said his group was "extremely disappointed that our allies did not put their anti-LGBT colleagues on the spot and force a vote on the measure that remains popular with the American people."

The issue is certain to re-emerge when the full Senate debates the legislation, although it is doubtful that sponsors can command the 60 votes that will be needed to make it part of the legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he will bring the legislation to the Senate floor early next month for a debate that some aides predict could consume a month or more, with an outcome that is impossible to predict.

The fate of immigration legislation in the House is even less clear, although it is due to receive a hearing in the Judiciary Committee there on Wednesday.

Despite the concern that bipartisan support for the legislation was fragile, there was no doubting the command over committee proceedings that Senate backers held.

In a final reminder, an attempt by Sen. Ted Cruz., R-Texas, to delete the pathway to citizenship failed on a 13-5 vote.

In defeat, he and others said they, too, wanted to overhaul immigration law, but not the way that drafters of the legislation had done.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, recalled that he had voted to give "amnesty" to those in the country illegally in 1986, the last time Congress passed major immigration legislation. He said that bill, like the current one, promised to crack down on illegal immigration, but said it had failed to do so.

"No one disputes that this bill is legalization first, enforcement later. And, that's just unacceptable to me and to the American people," he said shortly before the vote.

The centerpiece provision of the legislation allows an estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally to obtain "registered provisional immigrant status" six months after enactment if certain conditions are also met.

Applicants must have arrived in the United States before Dec. 31, 2011, and maintained continuous physical presence, must not have a felony conviction of more than two misdemeanors on their record, and pay a $500 fine.

The registered provisional immigrant status lasts six years and is renewable for another $500. After a decade, though, individuals could seek a green card and lawful permanent resident status if they are up to date on their taxes and pay a $1,000 fine and meet other conditions.

Individuals brought to the country as youths would be able to apply for green cards in five years.

Epson VS350W WXGA 3LCD Projector

If you're looking for high brightness in a WXGA data projector for a moderate price, the Epson VS350W WXGA 3LCD Projector is worth a close look. It's bright enough for use in a mid-sized or even larger conference room or classroom, even with some ambient light, and has very good data image quality.

The VS350W has native WXGA (1,280 by 800 pixel) resolution, a 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio compatible with many laptops. The projector employs a light engine that uses 3LCD technology, which Epson helped develop. It has a rated brightness of 3,700 lumens, for both color and white brightness. (Our testing has demonstrated that LCD projectors may have a significant brightness advantage in displaying colors, even when their white-light brightness is equal.)

The white and black projector measures 4.2 by 10.4 by 13.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 7.2 pounds. Although you could take it on the occasional trip, it's most suitable for placement on a cart or even permanent installation. Behind the lens are a focus wheel, and a zoom wheel with a generous 1.6x zoom, which should make it easy to correctly size the image when you can't move the projector.

The VS350W's port selection is modest, its highlight being the USB type B port that supports USB Plug 'n Play, which can be used to either let you send data images over a USB connection or control your PC's mouse pointer from the projector's remote.. There's also a VGA port, S-Video, Composite Audio/Video, and a serial port.

Data Testing
The VS350W's image filled our 60-inch-diagonal test screen from about 8 feet away. The image was bright enough to show up well with an abundance of ambient light. In our DisplayMate test ing, the VS350W's data image quality proved above average. Type was readable down to the smallest size. Colors were bright and reasonably true. There was mild greenish tinting in some images with white or gray backgrounds, and mild pixel jitter was visible over a VGA connection in some images that tend to bring it out, but this projector's image quality should be fine for most any presentation.

Video
On the plus side, as an LCD projector, the VS350W is immune from the rainbow effect that we often see in video from DLP-based projectors. Otherwise, posterization (the tendency for abrupt changes in color where they should be gradual) was a little more apparent than usual in video from a data projector, and I noticed some motion artifacts (occasional jaggedness at the border of light and dark zones in action scenes). Though I wouldn't want to watch a full-length movie with the VS350W, its video quality was suitable for short to medium-length clips as part of a presentation.

Audio from the 5-watt speaker is suitably loud for use in the mid-sized to larger conference rooms this projector is intended for, and of decent quality.

This projector is a tad brighter and of higher resolution than the Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 1835 WXGA Data Projector, which is rated at 3,500 lumens. (In practice the brightness difference may not be discernible, as perception of brightness is logarithmic, meaning that it takes considerably more than doubling a projector's rated brightness for it to appear twice as bright.) However, it lacks two of the Epson 1835's most notable ports: HDMI, and USB type A. The latter lets you project images stored on a USB thumb drive. They both have very good data image quality and the 1.6x zoom. The Epson 1835's video quality was somewhat better in our testing.

If resolution, and the ability to project very fine detail in data presentations, is paramount, the VS350W could well be your preferred projector of the two. For many, though, the 1835's HDMI port, USB thumb drive, and slightly better video quality may make it a better choice.

Another relatively bright projector, the ViewSonic PJD6553W, is rated at 3,500 lumens and has XGA resolution. At 5.7 pounds it's reasonably portable, while the V350W is best placed on a cart or permanently installed. In our testing, the PJD6553W showed very good data image quality and passable video. Unlike the VS350W, it has an HDMI port.

If you need a bright, high-resolution data projector, the Epson VS350W WXGA 3LCD Projector is well worth considering. It comes at a budget price, and although not lightweight, it is transportable enough for occasional trips if need be. Its data image quality is above par. If you can live with so-so video quality and the absence of an HDMI port, it's a lot of projector for a good price.

AP CEO calls records seizure unconstitutional

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The president and CEO of The Associated Press says the government's seizure of AP journalists' phone records was "unconstitutional" and already has had a chilling effect on newsgathering.

Gary Pruitt says the Justice Department's secret subpoena of reporters' phone records has made sources less willing to talk to AP journalists.

The Justice Department disclosed the seizure of two months of phone records in a letter the AP received May 10. The letter did not state a reason, but prosecutors had said they were conducting a leaks investigation into how the AP learned about an al-Qaida bomb plot in Yemen before it was made public last year. Pruitt said the AP story contradicted the government's claim at the time there was no terrorist plot.

Pruitt spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Google Plus app update for Android adds autobackup and enhancement tools for photos

Google (and especially the Google+ team) are keeping very busy. While I/O 2013 may have wrapped up last week, the company's just unveiled a new update for its social network on Android devices. Packing some familiar new photo features (like auto-backup and auto-highlights), the refresh includes even more Snapseed filters and tools. Location sharing can now tap into your circle arrangements, and you'll be able to share geo-locations with specific sets of people. Related hashtags will now function within the app, like we've already seen on the web-based version, while (perhaps predictably) there's now one-tap access to Mountain View's Hangouts app too. Gotta keep 'em all connected, right?

Update: As some trying to downloading the app may have noticed, the update is currently incompatible with recent versions of Android. Google has quickly chimed in that this is simply the result of a slip-up, however, and should be corrected shortly.

Kerry challenges Congress on diplomats' security

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry challenged Congress on Monday to go beyond its investigations of embassy security and help ensure that U.S. embassies and consulates abroad have the resources they need for appropriate security. His comments come as the Republicans continue to press for answers about the Obama administration's handling of last year's deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya.

Speaking to State Department trainees at the Foreign Service Institute, Kerry said the administration would spare no expense or effort to protect American diplomats overseas. However, in a sign of frustration with congressional Republicans who have suggested the administration is trying to cover up alleged malfeasance related to the Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi attack, he said lawmakers must play a part in mitigating the risks that diplomats take.

"We need to hold all of our elected officials accountable for making these efforts a priority," he said. "And that includes the Congress. This is a Congress that reminds us all the time they that are a co-equal branch of the federal government. And they should, because they are. But that means Congress needs to play a role on the world stage as well; not just investigating, but leading."

Congress, Kerry said, must provide "the resources and the support and the investments that make the risks that we take today worthwhile."

His comments follow a similar call that President Barack Obama made last week when he complained that persistent Republican-led investigations into Benghazi were a "sideshow" and urged lawmakers to provide more money to strengthen security at U.S. diplomatic missions around the world. The State Department is seeking about $1.4 billion for increased security; the money would come primarily from funds that haven't been spent in Iraq.

Since the Benghazi attack, Democrats have complained that Republicans cut $300 million from the Obama administration's budget request of $2.6 billion for diplomatic and embassy security in 2012. Republicans have said such allegations are unfair.

Kerry said Monday the administration is fully committed to implementing, and expanding upon, the recommendations of an independent review board that investigated the Benghazi attack and sharply criticized the State Department for not providing adequate security at the missions. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack.

But Kerry pointed out that the risks to American officials abroad are not new and will not go away.

"The dangers of diplomacy are not unique to this moment in time: our diplomatic missions didn't become dangerous that night in Benghazi," he said, noting that most of the 244 diplomats honored on plaques at the State Department were killed in the line of duty long before Benghazi.

Kerry said the risks can never be eliminated, but they can and will be mitigated because America's national security interests demand diplomatic outreach even in the most dangerous places.

"If we are going to bring light to the world, we have to go where it is dark," he said.

Bernard Baruch's 10 Rules of Investing | The Reformed Broker

  • Joshua M Brown
  • May 19th, 2013

You want someone to emulate?

Bernard Baruch (August 19, 1870 ? June 20, 1965) was the son of a South Carolina physician whose family moved to New York City when he was eleven year old. By his mid-twenties, he is able to buy an $18,000 seat on the exchange with his winnings and commissions from being a broker. By age 30, he is a millionaire and is known all over The Street as "The Lone Wolf".

In his two-volume 1957 memoirs,?My Own Story, Baruch left us with the following timeless rules for playing the game:

?Being so skeptical about the usefulness of advice, I have been reluctant to lay down any ?rules? or guidelines on how to invest or speculate wisely. Still, there are a number of things I have learned from my own experience which might be worth listing for those who are able to muster the necessary self-discipline:?

1. Don?t speculate unless you can make it a full-time job.

2. Beware of barbers, beauticians, waiters ? of anyone ? bringing gifts of ?inside? information or ?tips.?

3. Before you buy a security, find out everything you can about the company, its management and competitors, its earnings and possibilities for growth.

4. Don?t try to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. This can?t be done ? except by liars.

5. Learn how to take your losses quickly and cleanly. Don?t expect to be right all the time. If you have made a mistake, cut your losses as quickly as possible.

6. Don?t buy too many different securities. Better have only a few investments which can be watched.

7. Make a periodic reappraisal of all your investments to see whether changing developments have altered their prospects.

8. Study your tax position to know when you can sell to greatest advantage.

9. Always keep a good part of your capital in a cash reserve. Never invest all your funds.

10. Don?t try to be a jack of all investments. Stick to the field you know best.

Baruch would later go on from Wall Street to Washington DC as an advisor to both Woodrow Wilson and to FDR during World War II.

Later, he became known as the Park Bench Statesman, owing to his fondness for discussing policy and politics with his acquaintances outdoors.

He lived til a few days shy of his 95th birthday in 1965. You could do worse than to invest and live based on these simple truths.

Getting Into Internet Marketing? Read These Great Tips! ? Hot Article ...

Whether your business is conducted wholly online or not, internet marketing is an important part of corporate advertising in this modern, technological age. It is the most effective way of making sure the world knows of the products you have to sell or the message you want to be heard. Here are some ways that you can use this technique to its best advantage.

Try to combine your products together and offer a discount for people who purchase the entire package instead of one item at a time. People love to have the feeling that they got a deal on something. This will also increase exposure for the other products you have to offer on the site.

Are you ready to try internet marketing? Good for you! Make your website look professional! If your website obviously looks unprofessional, people will not trust it. They will not want to buy from you! You can easily find templates for business websites or even use a blog, if you cannot afford to hire a web designer!

One internet marketing tip that anyone can implement is to give your past customers a catalog of add on items that are directly related to items they have previously bought. You already know what sorts of items they have bought from you so sending them related products is a good way to get repeat customers.

They key to getting more visits is to write a good review of your website. A review is the short paragraph that appears when your website comes up in a search result. A good review should instantly grab the visitor?s attention and make them want to learn more about your website.

In order to have effective advertisements in terms of internet marketing, a good strategy to use is to add words such as ?you or your? in your advertisements. This will make your visitors feel at ease as they see that you are talking to them individually. For example you can say things like, ?You could be our next lucky customer to win $100?.

If you have a Facebook page that is related to your company, make sure to continue adding content all the time. When you post something new, it makes your page relevant and contemporary, as followers will notice this. Also, every post that you make will appear on the current news feed for your followers, increasing your visibility.

If you offer a seasonal promotion as a part of your Internet marketing strategy, always remember to update your website once the season or holiday has passed. A current offer makes it appear that you care for your website with great attention. There is nothing that lowers consumer confidence in your product more than seeing a summer promotion in October.

Have more than one web page set up since you may be trying to reach a few different demographics of people. The same web page that attracts a 30-year-old stockbroker will not be the same one that appeals to a 65-year-old army vet, so your best bet would be to have a few different pages available.

Choose your words carefully! When marketing online, telling someone they are ?investing in your product? is much more likely to increase your chances of getting a purchase than telling them to ?buy it.? Investing signifies that your product will be useful for the long term, which is exactly what customers want in a purchase.

It?s up to you to take everything you learn and turn it into success. The more you read, experience, or hear, the more you can turn into marketing strategies that work. Keep seeking knowledge and you will find that there is no situation you can?t deal with, and that will lead you to major profits.

Police call fatal NYC shooting a hate crime

NEW YORK (AP) ? Police say a gunman used anti-gay slurs before fatally shooting a 32-year-old man in New York City's Greenwich (GREN'-ich) Village.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Saturday that the shooting, which occurred just after midnight, appears to have been a hate crime.

Kelly says the gunman was seen urinating on the street outside a bar, then made anti-gay remarks to the bartender and showed him that he was wearing a holster with a silver pistol.

The commissioner says the gunman then confronted the victim and a companion on the street and asked if they were "gay wrestlers."

Kelly says the man shot the victim in the face. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police identified him as Harlem resident Marc Carson. The name of the suspect was not immediately released.

Authorities: Hofstra student killed by police

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ? A New York college student being held by an armed home intruder was shot and killed by a Nassau County police officer who had responded to a report of a home invasion at an off-campus home, police said Saturday.

Andrea Rebello was shot once in the head Friday morning by an officer who opened fire after the masked intruder, Dalton Smith, pointed a gun at the officer while holding the 21-year-old junior in a headlock, Nassau County homicide squad Lt. John Azzata said.

The Nassau County police officer fired eight shots at Smith, who has what police have described as an "extensive" criminal background, Azzata said. Smith was hit by seven bullets and died. Rebello was shot once in the head, Azzata said.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale said he had traveled to Rebello's Tarrytown, N.Y., home to explain to Rebello's parents what happened.

Earlier Saturday, police announced that Smith, 30, was wanted on a parole violation related to a first-degree robbery conviction and had an arrest history dating back nearly 15 years.

The shooting came just days before the school's commencement ceremonies, which are scheduled to take place Sunday.

A university spokeswoman said Saturday students will be handed white ribbons to wear in memory of Rebello.

Rebello was in the two-story home with her twin sister Jessica, another woman and another man were when the Smith, wearing a ski mask, walked into the house through an open front door, Azzata said. The intruder allowed the third unidentified woman to leave and collect money from an ATM, and she called 911.

Two police officers arriving at the home encountered Smith holding onto Rebello.

Kenyan police clear protesters - and a drove of pigs - from Parliament's gates

Demonstrators are upset with efforts by Kenya's lawmakers to give themselves a pay raise.

The protests began with a march through Nairobi's streets, with demonstrators chanting and carrying placards critical of Members of Parliament (MPs). Protesters had planned to then go inside and "Occupy Parliament," but that proved difficult after police in riot gear surrounded the building.

The police made 15 arrests, but struggled to control the agitated crowd as well as a drove of pigs ??bearing the inscriptions "MPigs" ? which demonstrators brought to the assembly's entrance. They also covered the ground with pig blood, which the pigs mingled in.

?We want to see resources being directed to service delivery, not meeting the wage bill? of lawmakers, says Morris Odhiambo, the director of the Centre for Law Research International.

According to Mr. Odhiambo, many Kenyans were living in deplorable conditions, because their tax money has either been stolen or paid to undeserving people. Nurses and teachers, who have sought pay increases, have not received serious attention from the government, he says. ?The attempt by MPs to increase their salary emphasizes the highest level of impunity.?

Kenya recently decreased the legislators? annual earnings from $120,000 to $75,000 to rein in the burgeoning salary expenses, following the creation of new state offices by a new constitution. Some analysts were already warning government operations may become unsustainable unless the government controls salaries of state officers.

Disregarding the developments, MPs have demanded an upward adjustment of the salary from the current $6,250 back to $10,000 per month, demands that have angered the public.

?If they can?t take the pay, they should resign. We want to rein in their greed. They have not done any work and we are disappointed they are seeking a pay raise even before they work,? says Mr. Simon Muoki, a young environmental rights campaigner.

?This has been our country?s problem for the last 50 years. MPs have forced decisions ? including their pay ??in disregard of the feelings of those who elect them,? says Jedida Wanjiru, an octogenarian at the demonstrations.

For the past month, the lawmakers have arm-twisted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), a government body that?s sets salaries of all state officers. With MPs threatening to disband it, the SRC has stuck to its guns.

On Monday?the commission said it will not increase the salary even with threats and intimidation. Sarah Serem, SRC?s chairperson said the commission?s concern was how to reduce the wage bill so that the savings can be used for development work. She said Kenya's total revenue was $11.8 billion, but the country spends $5.7 billion on salaries.

?This amount is not only huge, but it is unaffordable and unsustainable. It stands in the way of the country?s development agenda,? Ms. Serem told a news conference in Nairobi.

New method proposed for detecting gravitational waves from ends of universe

May 16, 2013 ? A new window into the nature of the universe may be possible with a device proposed by scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno and Stanford University that would detect elusive gravity waves from the other end of the cosmos. Their paper describing the device and process was published in the physics journal Physical Review Letters.

"Gravitational waves represent one of the missing pieces of Einstein's theory of general relativity," Andrew Geraci, University of Nevada, Reno physics assistant professor, said. "While there is a global effort already out there to find gravitational waves, our proposed method is an alternate approach with greater sensitivity in a significantly smaller device.

"Our detector is complementary to existing gravitational wave detectors, in that it is more sensitive to sources in a higher frequency band, so we could see signals that other detectors might potentially miss."

Geraci and his colleague Asimina Arvanitaki, a post-doctoral fellow in the physics department at Stanford University, propose using a small, laser-cooled, tunable sensor that "floats" in an optical cavity so it is not affected by friction. Geraci is seeking funding to begin building a small prototype in the next year.

"Gravity waves propagate from the remote corners of our universe, they stretch and squeeze the fabric of space-time," Geraci said. "A passing gravity wave changes the physically measured distance between two test masses -- small discs or spheres. In our approach, such a mass experiences minimal friction and therefore is very sensitive to small forces."

While indirect evidence for gravity waves was obtained by studying the changing orbital period of a neutron star binary, resulting in the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics, gravity waves have yet to be directly observed.

"Directly detecting gravitational waves from astrophysical sources enables a new type of astronomy, which can give us "pictures" of the sky analogous to what we have by using telescopes," Geraci said. "In this way the invention of a gravitational wave detector, which lets us "see" the universe through gravity waves, is analogous to the invention of the telescope, which let us see the universe using light. Having such detectors will allow us to learn more about astrophysical objects in our universe, such as black holes."

The approach the authors describe can exceed the sensitivity of next-generation gravitational wave observatories by up to an order of magnitude in the frequency range of 50 to 300 kilohertz.

Their paper, "Detecting high-frequency gravitational waves with optically levitated sensors," appeared in Physical Review Letters, a publication of the physics organization American Physical Society.

Geraci also presented his research at the annual American Physical Society Meeting in Denver in April. The meeting is attended by particle physicists, nuclear physicists and astrophysicists to share new research results and insights.

Human skin cells converted into embryonic stem cells: First time human stem cells have been produced via nuclear transfer

May 15, 2013 ? Scientists at Oregon Health & Science University and the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) have successfully reprogrammed human skin cells to become embryonic stem cells capable of transforming into any other cell type in the body. It is believed that stem cell therapies hold the promise of replacing cells damaged through injury or illness. Diseases or conditions that might be treated through stem cell therapy include Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cardiac disease and spinal cord injuries.

The research breakthrough, led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D., a senior scientist at ONPRC, follows previous success in transforming monkey skin cells into embryonic stem cells in 2007. This latest research will be published in the journal Cell online May 15 and in print June 6.

The technique used by Drs. Mitalipov, Paula Amato, M.D., and their colleagues in OHSU's Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, is a variation of a commonly used method called somatic cell nuclear transfer, or SCNT. It involves transplanting the nucleus of one cell, containing an individual's DNA, into an egg cell that has had its genetic material removed. The unfertilized egg cell then develops and eventually produces stem cells.

"A thorough examination of the stem cells derived through this technique demonstrated their ability to convert just like normal embryonic stem cells, into several different cell types, including nerve cells, liver cells and heart cells. Furthermore, because these reprogrammed cells can be generated with nuclear genetic material from a patient, there is no concern of transplant rejection," explained Dr. Mitalipov. "While there is much work to be done in developing safe and effective stem cell treatments, we believe this is a significant step forward in developing the cells that could be used in regenerative medicine."

Another noteworthy aspect of this research is that it does not involve the use of fertilized embryos, a topic that has been the source of a significant ethical debate.

The Mitalipov team's success in reprogramming human skin cells came through a series of studies in both human and monkey cells. Previous unsuccessful attempts by several labs showed that human egg cells appear to be more fragile than eggs from other species. Therefore, known reprogramming methods stalled before stem cells were produced.

To solve this problem, the OHSU group studied various alternative approaches first developed in monkey cells and then applied to human cells. Through moving findings between monkey cells and human cells, the researchers were able to develop a successful method.

The key to this success was finding a way to prompt egg cells to stay in a state called "metaphase" during the nuclear transfer process. Metaphase is a stage in the cell's natural division process (meiosis) when genetic material aligns in the middle of the cell before the cell divides. The research team found that chemically maintaining metaphase throughout the transfer process prevented the process from stalling and allowed the cells to develop and produce stem cells.

"This is a remarkable accomplishment by the Mitalipov lab that will fuel the development of stem cell therapies to combat several diseases and conditions for which there are currently no treatments or cures," said Dr. Dan Dorsa, Ph.D., OHSU Vice President for Research. "The achievement also highlights OHSU's deep reproductive expertise across our campuses. A key component to this success was the translation of basic science findings at the OHSU primate center paired with privately funded human cell studies."

One important distinction is that while the method might be considered a technique for cloning stem cells, commonly called therapeutic cloning, the same method would not likely be successful in producing human clones otherwise known as reproductive cloning. Several years of monkey studies that utilize somatic cell nuclear transfer have never successfully produced monkey clones. It is expected that this is also the case with humans. Furthermore, the comparative fragility of human cells as noted during this study, is a significant factor that would likely prevent the development of clones.

"Our research is directed toward generating stem cells for use in future treatments to combat disease," added Dr. Mitalipov. "While nuclear transfer breakthroughs often lead to a public discussion about the ethics of human cloning, this is not our focus, nor do we believe our findings might be used by others to advance the possibility of human reproductive cloning."
